O Núcleo de Estudos Amazônicos (NEA) foi criado junto à Reitoria por meio da Portaria GR-087/1985, destinado a coordenar o incentivo, apoio e promoção da pesquisa científica e tecnológica sobre a Amazônia, de modo a estimular a cooperação interdisciplinar no âmbito da Unicamp e a facilitar a interação com outras instituições de pesquisa. O NEA não chegou a ser implantado.
